Mayer Brown Hires Derivatives Expert

Mayer Brown hired Josh Cohn, a derivatives specialist, as a partner its the New York office and the leader of the U.S. derivatives and structured products practice and co-leader of the global derivatives and structured products practice.

At the same time, Edmund Parker was named a co-leader of the practice. He is also leader of the derivatives and structured products practice at Mayer Brown’s London office.

Cohn previously was a partner in the New York office of Allen & Overy and a member of the firm’s international capital markets practice. A specialist in derivatives who represents dealers and end-users in a wide range of transactions, he has extensive experience as U.S. counsel to the International Swaps and Derivatives Association.

Before  joining Allen & Overy, Cohn was a derivatives counsel at Cravath Swaine & Moore in New York; a senior vice president and general counsel at DKB Financial Products and a first vice president and counsel at Security Pacific National Bank.

Cohn’s hiring continues the growth trend for Mayer Brown’s New York office, which in the last 12 months has added 10 lateral partners in practice areas including global projects, capital markets, intellectual property, litigation and insurance and reinsurance.

Cohn has been most recently involved in many aspects of derivatives and structured transactions in insolvency and dispute, as well as in clearing house and regulatory reform.

“Josh is a world class lawyer who will help our clients to shape and position themselves to take advantage of fundamental changes in the regulation of the derivatives industry,” said Paul Jorissen, a finance partner at Mayer Brown and member of the firm’s management committee.

“The derivatives market is global not local,” Cohn said. “Mayer Brown’s platform in the Americas, Europe and Asia was a big draw for me. I'm looking forward to joining forces with Edmund Parker in London. Together we can continue the rapid expansion of Mayer Brown’s global Derivatives and Structured Products practice.”

“Josh is a first class lawyer," Parker said. "With only a handful of firms able to play at the top level in the Americas, Europe and Asia, the wealth of experience and expertise which he brings us will have an immense impact.”
