Mitt  Romney, who will become the Republican Party's presidential nominee later this month, is not saying whether the U.S. housing market should continue to have a government backstop. His running mate on the other hand, has chosen sides in the intra-party dispute over that question.  

Rep. Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin congressman who chairs the House Budget Committee has argued that the mortgage market should be privatized.
