Fitch mourns passing of longtime ABCP analyst

Mick Brown, an asset-backed commercial paper analyst whose affable demeanor impressed the industry as much as his grasp of the market he covered, died on Friday, Jan. 5. He was 46. The cause was complications from pneumonia.

Brown joined Fitch Ratings in April 2006. Although he spent less than one year at the firm, he was known in the ABCP sector long before that. He worked at Charles Schwab Investment Management, in San Francisco for eight years, where he was a buy-side credit analyst and supported the firm's money market, bond and municipal funds. He did credit analysis of ABCP programs, as well as international and domestic financial institutions.

"He was a great guy, very decent and kind of humble," said one longtime acquaintance, adding that Brown was very intelligent, but friendly and approachable at the same time. Prior to Schwab, Brown worked at D.M. Stone & Co. and Krambo Corp., both in San Francisco and at the Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. in Novato, Calif., according to Fitch.

"The sudden loss shocked all of us at Fitch as well as friends throughout the industry who also knew Mick from his previous role at Charles Schwab. Mick was well known throughout the ABCP and financial institutions industries where his vast knowledge was admired by all," Fitch said in a release.

Brown graduated summa cum laude from the University of San Francisco. He held numerous analytical certifications, including Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Financial Risk Manager (FRM) and Professional Risk Manager (PRM).

A funeral service for Brown was expected last Friday at The Church of the Holy Trinity in New York. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mick Brown Family Memorial Fund, care of Fitch managing director Debbie Seife.

His wife Janet; daughter Samantha; a sister, a brother and his parents survive him.
