M.R. Beal Opens South Carolina Office

Loren Carlson and Edward Chan joined M.R. Beal & Co. as managing director and vice president, respectively. Both hires will be part of the firm’s public finance department.

Carlson has more than 30 years experience in public and structured finance strategies. He will open M.R. Beal’s Charleston, South Carolina office and will focus on developing new business and deal execution in the Southeastern region.

Carlson was previously senior vice president at William R. Hough & Co., where he also served as a board member and member of the firm’s executive committee.

Earlier in his career, Carlson worked in the public finance and ABS divisions at various firms including Blythe Eastman, Paine Webber (currently UBS), Manufacturers Hanover Securities Corp. and Chemical Securities (currently JPMorgan Chase).

The new hire is widely known for playing a key role in helping the financing of post-secondary education in the U.S. He helped build the multi-billion dollar ABS market in federal and private educational loans.

Meanwhile, Chan will be focusing his efforts at M.R. Beal on marketing, structuring, and the executing of both taxable and tax-exempt bond deals. He most recently served as vice president of Loop Capital Markets, where he offered his expertise in deal structuring and execution, cash-flow modeling, credit analysis, as well as innovative solutions for municipal issuers.

He also has significant experience structuring deals for various credits, such as tax-backed, tobacco-settlement, utility, airport, lease revenue, and tax-increment bonds.
